Interview Name: Marla
1. Do you think teenage boys or girls have a worse body image?
Girls because there is more advertising about them and more commercials using women's bodies to "entice" people to buy their products or use beautiful women to market their products. Most of the women put on commercials are extremely beautiful and too thin which gives girls a negative outlook on themselves.
2. What causes people to be insecure about themselves and have a negative body image?
When they compare themselves to models, icons, or actor/actresses. Those people are there standard and many of those people have had makeovers, trainers, and many unhealthy things to change them. It isn't the real person they are just fake from everything that they have done to look that way.
3. What is something that causes people to not like themselves the way they are?
Many people ie parents, teachers, and peers, influence or "pressure" children to focus on improving the outer appearance of the teen. We get the assumption that everything has to look a certain way from the media and direct people in our life.
4. What was normal body image when you were a kid? For girls? For boys?
I do not remember very many commercials emphasizing women's body image. There was still name brand things that people wore but there were only a few that people bought.
5. Did people care as much what they looked like or what they wore when you were a kid?
I do not think we spent as much time or thought it was as bad. Although eating disorders and anorexia were starting to become more common, mainly among girls.
6. What makes the biggest impact on teenagers on the way they think of themselves. Media? Friends?
It depends on each kid. Teenagers that pay attention to media and magazines more would be more influenced by them but others would be by their friends.
7. How do you make others feel about their body image?
I think with my children if something doesn't match their clothing I will try influence them to wear something that matches. I also influence them in the area of modesty.
8. Are you too confident or not confident enough in your looks?
I care what I look like but I think I spend less time than the average woman on her looks. I am frugal with what I wear and dress modestly. I try to dress appropriately for work in business casual.
9. What advice would you give someone with poor body image?
I would tell them to be content with the way they look, spend less time in front of the mirror, and try to learn to be yourself and not overly obsess with the way you look.
10. Personally do you feel males or females have the biggest impact on todays view on image?
Probably females because they care more and make more comments about it. Media tends to focus on women more than men.
